CONCERTO IBÉRICO – Baroque Orchestra (CIOB) emerged from the successful cultural dynamic developed by MAAC in Castelo Branco region. In this dynamic, the CIMA International Courses of Ancient Music are enrolled, as well as the festival Serie Ibérica de Música Antiga. The orchestra counts since its origins with the fundamental support of the municipalities of Castelo Branco and Idanha-a-Nova.
Under the direction of João Janeiro, CIOB heirs the work previously developed by the Academic Baroque Orchestra, that performed in concert in Portugal, Spain and Italy. CONCERTO IBÉRICO started its activities in October 2012. Since then, it has integrated more than 60 musicians; some of the best musicians of the new generations of historical performance in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Poland have already worked with CIOB.
Since its foundation, it has presented more than forty different orchestral programs in Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, with a particular emphasis on programs dedicated to Bach's orchestral music: Brandenburg and harpsichord solo concerts; and programs dedicated to Iberian and Southern Europe musical heritages like the Differencias Project, the music project for UNESCO - Creative Music Cities; David Perez's Morti Matuttino, etc. Since 2014 has started several international collaborations with Norwegian and Icelandic artists, and has worked with several renowned European violinists, among them, Lorenzo Colitto, Monica Waisman, Florian Deuter and Katalin Hivrnak In 2016, performed Bach’s St. John Passion under the direction of Ketil Haugsand, from which his first live recorded CD come out.
The second CD, ‘Vai a Napoli’, is dedicated to orchestral music of Neapolitaninfluence. In 2019 presented J. S. Bach’s Passion with a fantastic soloist team,
including Carlos Mena, Tiago Mota and Benjamin Glaubitz. In 2021 has presented the integral of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerts, and in 2022 will perform G. F. Handel’s ‘The Messiah’ Oratory with renowned soloists.
